- ZoLa is named after our two rescued dogs, Zoey and Lani. Zoey and Lani are both full of personality and have been our personal mascots since adoption. We both grew up with family pets and are very passionate about rescued dogs and animal welfare.
Zoey. Zoey is the real-life embodiment of Scrappy-Doo. Despite being ¼ the size of Lani, she is the alpha dog. As a 5-year old Miniature Pinscher weighing only 13 pounds, Zoey has the heart and attitude of a full size Doberman Pinscher. Like many MinPins, she has no fear, is full of energy and approaches all dogs and strangers with the same curiosity and tenacity, regardless of size. Her “Let me at ‘em” approach to life is contagious and inspired us to launch ZoLa.
We adopted Zoey through the Animal Welfare League of Arlington. We instantly fell in love with Zoey when she was jumping around in her cage upon arrival and fell asleep on Jordan’s lap in AWLA’s play room.
Lani. Despite her formidable presence, Lani is the real-life embodiment of the cowardly lion from the Wizard of Oz. Scarred from mistreatment in her early life, she is often timid and scared of the unknown.
Lani is a 3-year old miniature pinscher mix that we rescued through Lucky Dog Animal Rescue in Washington, DC. We thought Lani was a purebred Miniature Pinscher but she quickly grew to over three times the size of Zoey – it looks as though she may be mixed with German Shepherd. As a puppy, Lani had been in a kill shelter in South Carolina for a few months and was about to be put down. Thankfully, Lucky Dog connected us with her. Lucky Dog saved Lani from the kill shelter and drove her from South Carolina to Washington, D.C. along with a van full of other lucky dogs. When Lani was handed over to me with her fur coat hugging her ribs, she was shaking with fear as she had clearly lived a life of abuse and malnourishment. Today, Lani is full of personality, happy to have been rescued and often scared of her own shadow due to the abuse she sustained as a puppy. She is incredibly compassionate - she loves to snuggle and greet everybody with her frog-like tongue. Rescuing Lani was one of the most impactful moments that inspired our interest in starting a socially responsible brand to expand awareness for organizations that save our animal friends and give them the life they deserve.
- Dogs are man’s best friend and deeply ingrained in the American way of life – they are family members and personal mascots, they help the men and women serving our country hunt down and protect us from terrorists, criminals and WMDs, they rescue us from fires and danger, they help the blind see, assist disabled people, comfort the grieving and have the uncanny ability to alert people to those with seizures and save those who may be dying, and they search for and rescue missing people.
Simply put - dogs enrich our lives, love us unconditionally and inspire us all to live life to the fullest. It’s only appropriate that we named our brand after our best friends and commemorate the human-animal bond with a distinctive logo over our heart Each season, ZoLa will honor the human-animal bond by introducing a new dog breed logo with a unique story.
The English Bulldog
The English Bulldog personifies the characteristics of an underdog – a kind and equable disposition, resolute and courageous and a pacific and dignified demeanor (cite the AKC). The English Bulldog symbolizes the juxtaposition of a scrappy and headstrong appearance with a sense of nobility and regalness.
The dogged pursuit of overcoming obstacles to live a distinguished and righteous life is the ultimate mark of an underdog. The Bulldog was originally bred for bull-baiting in the 1500s and as such had to be courageous and impervious to pain. The evolution of this fine breed to overcome its ferocious origins and early mistreatment to become one of the most gentle and adored breeds inspires us all to approach any challenge with the same tenacity and humility. Our logo features a stocky Bulldog with its head held high complemented with ZoLa’s signature red neckscarf.
- We have always had a strong appreciation for well-made, classic casual wear with a particular emphasis on fit, feel and distinctiveness. ZoLa’s inaugural product, the Underdog Polo Shirt, was born as a combination of these interests - meticulous design, craftsmanship and the finest materials fused with a distinctive logo and story that embodies ZoLa’s core values and social mission.
The Underdog Polo Shirt is made from luxurious 100% Peruvian Pima cotton in a custom-engineered lightweight pique knit with an uber-soft and comfortable feel. The fit was carefully crafted and designed through extensive research on the most desirable fit characteristics of consumers. The 2-button placket is accentuated with laser-engraved buttons bearing ZoLa’s name. The seams, trim and interior lining are taped and reinforced with materials that encompass ZoLa’s signature color scheme – sand and sky.
