Every year, approximately 5 million to 7 million companion animals are taken in by animal shelters nationwide. 3 million to 4 million of these animals are euthanized (60% of dogs).
Combine that reality with the fact that only 10% of owned dogs were adopted from an animal shelter. Most pet store puppies come from puppy mills, mass-breeding operations in which ill, suffering dogs are treated inhumanely and kept in deplorable conditions. Puppy mills breed between 2 million and 4 million puppies each year.
The mistreatment and unnecessary killing of animals is a national epidemic. We are changing that.
We have a lifelong appreciation for pets and being involved in animal welfare causes. Through our involvement with various local animal rescue groups and shelters, we have come to realize two things that are crystal clear: these organizations
We created ZoLa and our Be Awear mission to help raise needed funds and expand awareness and support for critical animal welfare/rescue organizations.
Rescuing Lani as a puppy from a kill shelter was one of the most impactful moments that inspired our commitment to animal welfare. When a frail Lani with her fur coat hugging her ribs was handed to me by Lucky Dog Animal Rescue staff, she was shaking with fear as she had clearly been abused and malnourished in her prior life. No animal deserves to be treated in such a way or have their life cut short and we created ZoLa to help provide our animal friends the life they deserve.
Everybody loves an underdog story and is inspired by those who have overcome obstacles to life the good life. Please share your underdog stories (whether human- or animal-related) with the ZoLa community on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (@wearzola) and let us know how you are contributing to the animal welfare and rescue cause.
